How to Say “NO” To Tooth Loss – 5 Easy Tips for Better Dental Health

Our teeth are built to last a lifetime, but poor oral hygiene habits and disease can cause tooth loss. These five tips from your Aldie VA dentist can help you avoid infection, trauma and disease so you can keep your natural teeth for life.

1. Avoid trauma.

Our teeth are wonderful tools, but you should only use them for chewing foods. Avoid trauma by never using your teeth to remove caps from household products or food containers, cracking shells, kernels or nutshells, chewing on office supplies or pens, tearing twine or thread or loosening knots.

2. Stop grinding.

Grinding your teeth can transform your bite and be a ticket to an orthodontist’s office. Don’t take stress out on your teeth; instead, talk to your dentist about getting a custom-fitted mouthguard and other ways to stop grinding.

3. Stay healthy.

Periodontal disease and decay are leading causes of tooth loss. Certain lifestyle choices, like smoking and having poor eating habits, can increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. Disease like arthritis, diabetes and hypertension can also raise your risk, making it extra important to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet and get exercise daily.

4. Practice good dental hygiene.

Eliminate plaque and bacteria by brushing a minimum of  twice each day and flossing your teeth daily. Use a fluoride toothpaste, change your toothbrush every three months and talk to your dentist about the proper methods.

5. See your dentist regularly.

Schedule appointments with your dentist twice a year for a complete dental cleaning and evaluation, including taking X-rays.
